Diamond means invincible in Greek; doesn't that make perfect sense when you consider a sixtieth wedding anniversary is symbolised by the hardest naturally occurring substance on earth? Last weekend we celebrated my parents 60th wedding anniversary, where they met, in Halls Gap. They were married on 9 November 1963. I suspect the same things that have made their marriage work are the foundation for all successful relationships, partnerships and teams. So, I asked them what they think are the key elements of a partnership that has not only lasted, but has thrived, for sixty years.

And this is what they said (in their own words):

  1. Trust in each other, including honesty and loyalty.

  2. Mutual affection and complete respect for each other.

  3. Total commitment to our partnership and treat each other as equals.

  4. Appreciate the abilities and skills each other have.

  5. Always discuss issues and work them through before making decisions.

  6. Be ready to compromise - give and take. Don't escalate disagreements.

  7. Be supportive - be ready to back up the other when needed.

Not much left to say, except...

"I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot: together we can do great things." - Mother Teresa
